The standard "You only use 10% of your brain" addage is brought up, but Cyborg immediately points out that people are using all of their brain at all times, even when sleeping (which science has proven), and states the "10%" thing is just used by the media for storytelling purposes. 90% of Your Brain: "Brain Percentages" pokes fun at this trope while still focusing around it.Teeny Titans (2016) - A Parody of Toys To Life Games.Teen Titans Go! Think of it as being in the vein of Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth or RWBY Chibi, where the idea is to take established characters and put them in increasingly outlandish situations that wouldn't be possible in their more serious, plot-driven forms. Whereas the 2003 Titans were heroes regularly looking to do good and help those in need, the Go! Titans are portrayed more like a self-absorbed group of teenagers who are often mocked by both villains and fellow heroes alike for their tendency to goof-off rather than fight crime. Oh, and fight crime if they ever feel like it. In contrast to its animesque action/adventure predecessor, Teen Titans Go! is a Denser and Wackier Gag Series revolving around the titular superhero team and their comedic misadventures as they mill about Jump City or hang out around Titans Tower. The main cast, as well as most of the supporting cast, reprise their respective roles from both productions. More specifically, it is a quasi- Spin-Off of the previous 2003 Teen Titans (2003) series, though it takes more direct inspiration from the New Teen Titans shorts that were also based on that incarnation. Teen Titans Go! is a Cartoon Network animated television series based on the DC Comics series, Teen Titans. The perspective and graphics hide the fact that it is most definitely a walking sim. Oxenfree - Probably my second favorite game of all time. I personally didn't care for it, but I didn't really enjoy Life is Strange, and from what I can tell, people that enjoy Life is Strange almost overwhelmingly enjoy Night in the Woods. Night in the Woods - More of a slice of life, emotional game than really a standard walking sim. Mutazione - This is going to skew a lot close to something like Life is Strange or Night in the Woods than a standard walking sim. The conceit of the game would definitely wear out it's welcome if it was longer than it is. Metamorphosis - It's fine, I mostly included it for completeness. Maize - Probably the only comedy walking sim I've ever played. Not exactly a walking sim, but definitely a very emotional game. Honestly I found it pretty boring, but maybe you'd enjoy it. Kentucky Route Zero - This game is very unique, I've heard it described as almost like an arthouse game, which I guess I can see. The sound track for this game is also particularly amazing. The story is much more abstract than most walking sims, but it is still an extremely good and emotional experience. Journey - Alongside Gone Home, Journey had a major part in basically inventing this genre. I could never get into it, but maybe you'd enjoy it. Her Story - A LOT of people really adore this game. It might come off as a bit basic now days as it's been copied and iterated on so much, but it's still very good. Gone Home - This is like the original walking simulator. First one took me less than 3 hours, not sure on the second as I played it on Gamepass.įirewatch - You've already played it, you know. There is a sequel that's okay, but not nearly as good as the original IMO.įAR: Lone Sails & FAR: Changing Tides - I really liked these games, but again I can see how someone might find them boring. I've put 40+ hours into it, but I've beaten it 3 times now. Plus it's currently 2 dollars on Steam, which is an absolute steal. The Fall this one isn't a walking simulator, but it's such a good game I felt like including it. Again, definitely get it on sale.Įverybody's Gone to the Rapture - Also good, though I can definitely how someone could find it boring, as you're essentially wondering around an empty town after everyone else disappeared. I still mean to get back to this at some point.Įvent - It's okay, some people really like it, personally I found the mechanic of talking with the computer got pretty old pretty fast. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist - Also good, also EXTREMELY short (less than an hour), but it's freeĮther One - This game is really good, but I never finished it for some reason. Earth is reliant on resources being sent back from the moon, when one day all communications from the moon stop, and all resources stop coming in. Apparently it only took me 46 minutes to beat, but it's $2.49 on Steam right now so I guess that's your call.ĭeliver us the Moon - I really liked this one. Probably the closest game to Stanley Parable.ĭear Ester I remember this game being fine. The Corridor - It's good, it's short, it's cheap. The Beginner's Guide - Good, surprisingly emotional, extremely short.īlackwood Crossing - Good game, very short (<2 hours for me), get it on saleĬall of the Sea - This is more of a puzzle game like Myst than a traditional walking sim, but the story is so good I felt like including it.Ĭlose to the Sun - A little more mediocre than some of the other games on this list IMO, but it's still worth checking out if you've got the time. Probably play Journey first to see if you'd enjoy this game. Anyhoo, in alphabetical order:Ībzu - It's basically Journey, but underwater. I started making notes about how long the games where and whether I thought they were worth the money, but that fell off pretty quickly, sorry. I'll go down my Steam and whatnot and see if I can find some more. Kholat was not very good imo, it's also much more horror than most walking sim's. This can lead to a handful of dogs shredding lines upon lines of your units while you're completely unable to do anything other than try to run from them. When told to attack the dogs, your units will be unable to target the dogs themselves. Game-Breaking Bug: In certain instances, the "handlers" of a unit of War Dogs may all be killed or routed, but the dogs will continue to fight on.They've become something of a meme themselves. Fan Nickname: Eastern Infantry are widely known as "pajama soldiers" because they look ridiculous and die really easily.Thankfully, they are a high tier unit in the tech tree, they're very expensive, and they can only be recruited by a few factions - the normally perpetually broke Parthia and Armenia who will struggle to afford them and can only surround them with weak infantry and Horse Archers, and the Seleucid Empire, who can afford them as well as back them up with all of the might of a Hellenic power.but usually doesn't last long enough in the campaign for this to matter. Thanks to their heavy armor, they can even stand up to all but the most elite spear infantry in protracted melee combat as well. While they are the slowest horse cavalry units in the game, they are still much faster than any infantry and their Foe-Tossing Charge is second only to elephants in damage. They are Lightning Bruiser units with very few counters. Even with an army kitted out to be as anti-chariot as possible, expect a lot of casualties in any battle where the enemy deploys a high number of chariots. While they have enough weaknesses to turn them into a Glass Cannon, you typically need to specially prepare your army to take advantage of the "Glass" part and they can still deal a lot of damage thanks to the "Cannon" part. Awesome Music: The soundtrack is full of fantastic music with pounding drums, menacing strings, and (of course) Ominous Latin Chanting which sounds like it came straight out of Gladiator. Also within days, an option to desaturate the campaign map was added to graphical settings. A number of early reactions didn't particularly enjoy how vibrant and saturated the campaign map was, and many wished for options to fade the colors to make it easier on the eyes.An option to activate or deactivate 1:1 population subtraction was added within days. a 300-unit regiment only taking 60 people out of population). An early point of criticism among streamers pre-release is that even at the highest unit scale, the increased unit size would only subtract the smallest-scale unit size's worth of population from cities (e.g.Several units' armor has been redesigned to be more realistic, meaning no more "Pajama Warriors" or Bronze Age Egyptians, although options exist to restore them to their original designs.Several broken factions from the original have been properly fixed and implemented to allow for play. The AI diplomacy has been overhauled, and the AI, in general, is a lot smarter than it used to be, especially at higher difficulties. The following lists all the teams on Rivals, and explains why they've been paired and dubbed as "rivals." Each of the teams' history of animosity and/or open expressions of hostility are detailed. Rivals combines individuals who have had acrimonious or at least strained relations or interactions prior to the season. The first-place male and female teams win $100,000 apiece, second-place wins $50,000 and the third-place finishers go home empty-handed. Īt the end of the season, six teams will compete in the final challenge - three of each gender. The team who wins the elimination round returns to the game and has a shot at a $300,000 prize, while the losing team is eliminated from the game. An open deliberation and vote then held among the players to determine which team of the same gender will face the last-place finisher in the Jungle. Though European settlers had long taken over the land surrounding the Falls, Cole shows Native Americans standing on a cliff overlooking the roaring waters.Ĭhurch was influenced by Cole’s style, but by 1857, he had adopted a far more mathematical approach to depicting the environment. The latter conjures an atemporal, pseudo-Edenic state. To get this one exactly right, the artist journeyed to the Falls in 1856 to work on site.īut Church’s wider approach differentiated his painting from the many, many other depictions of the Falls in more than just the details. Compare Church’s Niagara to Distant View of Niagara Falls, an 1830 painting by Church’s mentor, Thomas Cole. Earlier paintings by Church had drawn criticism for an unrealistic depiction of water. Collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.ĭespite the grandeur of the image, Church’s 1857 masterpiece was actually famed for its restraint and near-scientific attention to natural detail. Thomas Cole, Distant View of Niagara Falls (1830). So great was the public draw-and the monetary allure-of Niagara that when the recently opened Corcoran Gallery of Art acquired the painting in 1876 for $12,500, the institution was deemed to be a sure success. French academician Jean Léon Gérôme would refer to the painting as “las bas” (the foundation) of American artistic identity. Church would select Niagara to represent him at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where it won second prize. The painting was then sent on a tour of cities along the Eastern seaboard before heading to the UK that same year. It was shown in a darkened gallery in which only the painting was illuminated. In the exhibition’s several-week run, more than 100,000 people passed through, the painting becoming a rival to the Falls itself as an attraction.Ĭhurch’s merchandising acumen was second to none: admission also gave viewers the opportunity to purchase a print of the work, which cost $30 for an artist’s proof chromolithograph or $15 for a colorized print. In May 1857, when the painting was exhibited at the gallery of Williams, Stevens, and William, visitors were offered a glimpse of the painting for 25 cents. But it also represents the ambition and showmanship of urban commercial culture in the United States.Ī carnival-like hubbub accompanied the grand painting’s arrival in New York City. Niagara is a spectacle of raw, sublime nature. The Painting Was a Celebration of Nature-and Businessįrederic Edwin Church, circa 1855–1865. Here are three surprising facts about the painting that might make you see it in a whole new light. Another called the painting the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”įor Labor Day, we decided to take a closer look at Niagara. “Of the hundreds of paintings made of Niagara, before Church and after him, this is by common consent the greatest,” wrote the critic Pierre Berton. It cemented him as the most famous painter of the age in the United States. Niagara is one of Church’s most celebrated paintings-and perhaps his most important. But in the 1850s, he was drawn back north, and spent 1854 to 1856 extensively visiting Nova Scotia, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and, of course, Niagara Falls. The only student of Hudson River School painter Thomas Cole, Church first made his name with luminous and exotic landscapes of South America. One depiction, however, captured the public’s imagination more than the others: Frederic Edwin Church’s Niagara (1857), a seven-foot-wide colossus that seemed to press viewers dizzyingly close to the waterfall’s precipice. The colossal cataract at the border of New York and Ontario was the single most frequently depicted landscape in the Americas from 1800 to 1860. He is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Hartford, Connecticut.Niagara Falls has been called the American Mecca-a natural wonder and famed destination for honeymooners and daredevils alike. He turned his interest to the embellishment of his home, Olana, in Hudson, NY, now a museum in his memory.Ĭhurch died on April 7, 1900. By 1880 Church’s painting activity declined markedly. In 1876 he suffered from his first attack of “inflammatory rheumatism,” which led him to paint with his left hand. He was a founding trustee of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City and served with the institution from 1870 to 1887. His paintings were often extremely large, and they enthralled crowds with their realistic, technical virtuosity.Ĭhurch’s studio was in the 10th Street Studio Building in New York City from 1858 to 1887. In 1850, Church was also elected a member of the Century Association.Ĭhurch traveled from the arctic to the tropics making copious sketches in search of material for his elegant paintings. He became an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1849 and a full member the following year. He was soon proficient enough to begin exhibiting. In 1844, at the age of 18, Church became Thomas Cole’s only pupil. (One exception: Cakewalk recently made its entry-level Music Creator product available on STEAM. But so far, those solutions haven’t been available to music developers. This issue illustrates some of the tension: iLok consolidates licenses in a way that could potentially be more convenient, but any failure then impacts all products – and maintaining specific authorizations still transfers more responsibility to the user than something like a simple serial number authentication does.ĭevelopers of games now have access to online stores that promise a solution to piracy and make buying software more easily, ranging from the Xbox Live Arcade to STEAM to the Mac App Store. A recent search of the CDM press inbox revealed many developers that pitch “no iLok” as a selling point of their product. Many major developers (including Ableton, Cakewalk, MOTU, Propellerhead, Steinberg, and others) now use their own in-house copy protection of varying degrees of strength rather than third-party solutions. These issues are affecting license activations and transfers.Ĭopy protection schemes have come under increasing criticism in recent years – not only from users, but developers. Pro Tools 11 users are reporting significant issues with iLok License Manager. However, Morrison noted in his forum posts ongoing issues as of Saturday: Since the problem was remote, that appears to solve issues. This includes a fix that should re-synchronize iLoks with the servers. You can follow the latest official information from the deveoper: In addition to Pro Tools, affected products include plug-ins from Abbey Road, Antares (makers of AutoTune), Celemony (makers of Melodyne), Eventide, Flux, McDSP, Slate Digital, Sonnox, SoundToys, and Waves, according to a report issued by Simon Morrison and posted to forums at KVR Audio and GearSlutz on the 9th of June. iLok developer PACE has posted a solution, but as recently as this weekend Pro Tools 11 users continued to report problems. New installations and a process called “synchronization” can have the impact. A server glitch is to blame, but fixes have now taken since earlier in June and still appear to be at least partially incomplete. The reverse could very well be the case in the PACE household this Christmas. Many users of software employing the popular iLok copy protection product are finding their licenses invalidated. “I stopped believing in Santa a long time ago but I may just have to re-evaluate that assessment.” “Oh boy! Awesome fuckin release!” declared one. Whether AudioUTOPIA’s crack represents a permanent defeat of the iLok system remains to be seen but currently pirates are celebrating a flood of software just in time for the festive season. “Additionally you can removed the entire thing by going to Windows programs and features and uninstalling “PACE License Support Win64.” “Pro Tools setup will install the iLok driver however it’s not necessary for the release to work, you can disable it by pressing Windows key+R then typing services.msc, find “PACE License Services” right click and choose stop,” the group explains. The releases come courtesy of cracking group AudioUTOPIA who explain with their Pro Tools release how their technique completely negates the need for the iLok system to be in place. During the past several days dozens of pieces of software that use the iLok system have started to appear online. However, after remaining somewhat secure iLok2 – and by extension all of the software development companies that use PACE’s system – appear to have a problem on their hands. Licenses are managed from within the iLok License Manager, as illustrated in the image below. Over time, iLok appears to have gained a lot of traction within the pro-audio community, those individuals using sophisticated and often very expensive software such as Avid’s Pro Tools to create music. “The license is stored safely and securely inside the solid-state iLok smart key and can then be used to provide the authorization for protected software to run on any computer where that software is installed.” It’s as simple as dragging and dropping,” the company explains. “Once a license is delivered to an iLok account, your user simply downloads the license to their iLok. While iLok1 allows customers to carry up to 118 licenses, iLok2 can carry up to 500. Now on its second generation, iLok2 is a relatively cheap proprietary USB dongle that acts as a license storage device for software protected by PACE Anti-Piracy. One such solution is iLok from security company PACE. With the majority of all commercially available software slushing round on the Internet in pirate form, companies have always sought secure anti-piracy mechanisms to protect their products. |
